Calypso bulbosa, also known as the fairy or Venus’s slipper, can be found in undisturbed montane forests and has a circumpolar distribution. Across its range (for a map, click here), four varieties can be found: bulbosa across much of Eurasia, japonica in Japan, and americana and occidentalis east and west of the Sierra Nevada, respectively. Pictured here is var. occidentalis, photographed in situ by Ron Hanko near Chiwaukum Creek in Washington, USA.
